The 2005 Tasmanian Tom Quilty Cup Endurance horse ride will go down in the record books as the first ever to be cancelled. The last two legs of the 160 km endurance race, at Sheffield in northern Tasmania on June 10, were cancelled after the region recorded more than 50 mm in 24 hours. Organisers called off the event as a safety measure, when they could no longer guarantee access for recovery vehicles for either horses or riders.
Australia's most punishing horse endurance ride, the Tom Quilty Gold Cup is internationally prestigious. The ride had its beginnings more than 40 years ago when R.M. Williams and Northern Territory horseman Tom Quilty called together people in Australia's horse industry with the idea of creating a national endurance ride. Riders came from across Australia to compete in this year's Cup, and from Japan and the United Arab Emirates. One hundred and ten riders began the challenge at midnight, to ride 160 kilometres (100 miles) in one day, over some of Tasmania's most rugged terrain.
The three leading riders who went on to be declared the winners were Peter Toft and Penny Toft; and Adbullah Kharis from the United Arab Emirates.
